Anthony Hughes, Erich Ranfft, «Sculpture and its Reproductions»
Reaktion Books | ISBN: 1861890028 | 1997-09-01 | PDF | 216 pages | 3.31 MB

This book is the first of its kind to focus on issues concerning sculpture and reproduction, and to explore the theoretical and practical consequences. What does it mean for a sculpture to be reproduced? Does it diminish or add to the authenticity of the original? Ranging from the Ancient to the Modern world, these essays significantly add to our understanding of a number of major sculptors including Michaelangelo, Rodin and Brancusi.

The tumultuous last decades of British colonialism in India were catalyzed by more than the work of Mahatma Gandhi and violent conflicts. The concurrent upheavals in Western art driven by the advent of modernism provided Indian artists in post-1920 India a powerful tool of colonial resistance. Distinguished art historian Partha Mitter now explores in this brilliantly illustrated study this lesser known facet of Indian art and history.

About the author
Nick Robinson is a professional origami artist, and has been "folding paper" for 25 years. He has been a member of the British Origami Society for over 20 years, and currently he edits their magazine, as well as maintaining their website.

Summary: an origami classic for all folders
Rating: 5

This is the perfect book to inspire beginners and rekindle the enthusiasm of experts because it is the most thoughtful work on origami that I have ever read. Yes, it includes a packet of origami paper so the beginner can begin immediately on opening the book. The layout of the material is attractive and the writing is welcoming. And there is the required plentitude of excellent models to captivate both the beginner and expert. All that is sufficient for a useful book, but there is much more offered by the author.
Nick Robinson is a creator of original models who understands the creative process and communicates possibilities to the reader. He is an accomplished illustrator who knows what the reader needs to be shown and how to reveal it. Best of all, he has been a teacher of origami over decades and experienced the requirements of instruction. This is far more than a barebones collection of models, however valuable such a lively gathering is. Robinson is both relaxed and serious about the craft, so he takes time to write about how to begin, tips on the process of folding, and a discussion of the different styles of folding that have appeared in this ancient craft. What he communicates is valuable for the beginner and a necessary reminder for the expert.
The book is not quite perfect. The model on the cover is not included in the text. The origami paper is not the usual sheet white on one side and color on the other side, not conforming to the illustrations. Some photographs of the completed models would have been instructive. But these are trivial matters. Robinson is a well-rounded, great teacher so all who seek to be stimulated by this craft, realizing that we are actually and always dummies, will enjoy his Origami Kit For Dummies.

Summary: Great book for beginners, but there's lots for experts too
Rating: 5

I'm generally somewhat sceptical of books describing themselves as "for dummies": but after seeing a few people I respect in the origami community speak highly of this book, I decided to purchase a copy. I've been very pleased with the book: as with many of Robinson's books, there's a lot more text than one might expect to see in an origami book, but there are also lots of neat models diagrammed: the text is an unexpected bonus.
And as such, the book works well not just for beginners, but for experienced folders as well: I've recommended it to several people, and will continue to do so.

Summary: A definitive textbook
Rating: 5

Here is a book for anyone who has had a go at origami, and failed. It's a comprehensive guide filled with excellent diagrams, clear text and practical information. It features a variety of new and old models suitable for teachers of origami and the more experienced folder. This is destined to become a classic: a definitive textbook that wears its learning lightly. As such it is a bargain and I award it a richly-deserved five stars.

David Hofstede - Planet of the Apes: An Unofficial Companion
Publisher: ECW Press | 2001-06 | ISBN: 1550224468 | PDF | 220 pages | 10.30 MB

Released in 1967, Planet of the Apes was a top-ten box-office hit that captivated audiences with its provocative vision of the future. Over the next decade it spawned four sequels, a television series, an animated series, two comic books, and hundreds of merchandise tie-ins. To some, the Apes projects were a campy, sci-fi blast, with colourful characters and delightfully over-the-top performances. But others took the stories more seriously, as allegories on man`s struggles with such issues as race, intolerance, and protecting of the environment.
Though there hasn`t been a new Apes movie since 1974, the popularity of the original films and TV series has endured and, if anything, expanded in the interim. When director Tim Burton`s remake of the original Planet of the Apes is released in the summer of 2001, interest in the phenomenon is certain to be rekindled on a prodigious scale.
Planet of the Apes: An Unauthorized History is a comprehensive look at all aspects of Planet of the Apes, featuring interviews, reviews, complete cast and credit information, and a behind-the-scenes look at what made this quirky science-fiction series an enduring classic.

David Bradby, Andrew Calder - The Cambridge Companion to Moliere
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | 2006-10-02 | ISBN: 0521546656 | PDF | 266 pages | 14.55 MB

A detailed introduction to Molière and his plays, this Companion evokes his own theatrical career, his theatres, patrons, the performers and theatre staff with whom he worked, and the various publics he and his troupes entertained with such success. It looks at his particular brands of comedy and satire. L'École des femmes, Le Tartuffe, Dom Juan, Le Misanthrope, L'Avare and Les Femmes savantes are examined from a variety of different viewpoints, and through the eyes of different ages and cultures. The comedies-ballets, a genre invented by Molière and his collaborators, are re-instated to the central position which they held in his œuvre in Molière's own lifetime; his two masterpieces in this genre, Le Bourgeois gentilhomme and Le Malade imaginaire, have chapters to themselves. Finally, the Companion looks at modern directors' theatre, exploring the central role played by productions of his work in successive 'revolutions' in the dramatic arts in France.

Reaktion Books | ISBN: 1861891660 | 2005-04-01 | PDF | 224 pages | 5.03 MB

Looking outward for confirmation of who they were and what defined them as "civilized," Europeans encountered the returning gaze of what we now call the East, in particular the attention of the powerful Ottoman Empire. Global Interests explores the historical interactions that arose from these encounters as it considers three less-examined art objects — portrait medals, tapestries, and equestrian art —from a fresh and stimulating perspective. As portable artifacts, these objects are particularly potent tools for exploring the cultural currents flowing between the Orient and Occident.

Genuine Origami: 43 Mathematically-Based Models, From Simple to Complex

Jun Maekawa, "Genuine Origami: 43 Mathematically-Based Models, From Simple to Complex"
Japan Publications Trading | 2008 | ISBN: 4889962514 | 160 pages | PDF (scan, LQ) | 8,8 MB

Like his counterpart in the U.S., prominent origami artist and scientist Robert J. Lang, Jun Maekawa approaches origami from the perspective of mathematical and geometric principles. In Genuine Origami, Maekawa takes readers, step-by-step, through the fundamentals of his method, beginning with the basics and guiding them through simple figures (a mouse, an elephant, Santa Claus) all the way up to such highly sophisticated models as his signature creations, the devil and the peacock.

The 43 different models are grouped into five sections, including one chapter on the ABCs, three which present projects in order of increasing difficulty (Simple, Intermediate and Complex), and one called Varieties of Origami, which reveals how to use different kinds of papers and techniques. In addition to the folding instructions and diagrams, Maekawa explains the mathematical theory behind each project.

An intriguing blend of art and science, Genuine Origami will allow newcomers to discover the pleasures of folding at the same time that it enables beginners and experts alike to learn clever, surprising and elegant sequences to produce exceptional results.

Summary: Beutiful, beautiful, beautiful book
Rating: 5

Not much more to say. Diagrams are excellent, even for complete novices (if they have a little patience); and the fact that it builds a steady progression of techniques and folds makes it an excellent book to learn origami.

Beautiful book.

Summary: Gorgeous book, but be wary of misassembled copies!
Rating: 4

All of the excellent reviews of this book are correct, but I wanted to warn people that my copy of this book was misassembled. Pages 81-96 appeared twice and pages 97-112 were missing. If you buy the book, be sure to check all the pages before your return period expires! If you have a defective copy and the return period has expired, the US distributor (Oxford University Press) will exchange the book, but you will have to pay for shipping yourself.

Summary: The Demon Returns
Rating: 5

Jun Maekawa has been one of the premier origami innovators of the last 30 years. His 'Devil', which graces the cover of this book, is one of the most famous and fantastic designs of what I like to call the Early Age of Super-complexity, (though by today's standards it is more aptly considered high-intermediate). I learned the model from 'Viva! Origami!" which is only available in Japanese. The new folding method in "Genuine Origami" includes the creatures ears which were missing in the original diagrams. I lovingly call this model "Nick, the Nicotine Demon" after I used it to help some of my dorm-mates quit smoking.
All of the models in this book are constructed from single sheets of paper, mostly square, with no cutting or glue. This book is a good choice for a second origami book because it combines clear diagrams with a progression from simple to complex models, ending with the 'Devil'. Note that most of the more complex models should be folded from 10"x10" paper. The most outlandish model in here is a deer folded from a tea-bag wrapper.

Art School: (Propositions for the 21st Century)

Steven Henry Madoff, Steven Henry Madoff, "Art School: (Propositions for the 21st Century)"
The MIT Press | 2009 | ISBN: 0262134934 | 268 pages | PDF | 2,2 MB

The last explosive change in art education came nearly a century ago, when the German Bauhaus was formed. Today, dramatic changes in the art world—its increasing professionalization, the pervasive power of the art market, and fundamental shifts in art-making itself in our post-Duchampian era—combined with a revolution in information technology, raise fundamental questions about the education of today's artists. Art School (Propositions for the 21st Century) brings together more than thirty leading international artists and art educators to reconsider the practices of art education in academic, practical, ethical, and philosophical terms.

The essays in the book range over continents, histories, traditions, experiments, and fantasies of education. Accompanying the essays are conversations with such prominent artist/educators as John Baldessari, Michael Craig-Martin, Hans Haacke, and Marina Abramović, as well as questionnaire responses from a dozen important artists—among them Mike Kelley, Ann Hamilton, Guillermo Kuitca, and Shirin Neshat—about their own experiences as students. A fascinating analysis of the architecture of major historical art schools throughout the world looks at the relationship of the principles of their designs to the principles of the pedagogy practiced within their halls. And throughout the volume, attention is paid to new initiatives and proposals about what an art school can and should be in the twenty-first century—and what it shouldn't be. No other book on the subject covers more of the questions concerning art education today or offers more insight into the pressures, challenges, risks, and opportunities for artists and art educators in the years ahead.

Contributors: Marina Abramović, Dennis Adams, John Baldessari, Ute Meta Bauer, Daniel Birnbaum, Saskia Bos, Tania Bruguera, Luis Camnitzer, Michael Craig-Martin, Thierry de Duve, Clémentine Deliss, Charles Esche, Liam Gillick, Boris Groys, Hans Haacke, Ann Lauterbach, Ken Lum, Steven Henry Madoff, Brendan D. Moran, Ernesto Pujol, Raqs Media Collective, Charles Renfro, Jeffrey T. Schnapp, Michael Shanks, Robert Storr, Anton Vidokle

Questionnaires: Thomas Bayrle, Paul Chan, Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, Piero Golia, Ann Hamilton, Matthew Higgs, Mike Kelley, Guillermo Kuitca, Shirin Neshat, Paul Ramírez-Jonas, Dana Schutz, Brian Sholis, Fred Wilson

Summary: Very Informative
Rating: 5

This book is composed of valuable essays from critical thinkers of our century. I recommend it to young artists who are wanting to understand the artworld. This book has every subject in it that should be discussed in classrooms. It holds light in to how art schools prepare students for the art world.Consider it a proffessional seminar...Multiple opinions, and voices.Very Informative.

Giovanni Bellini

Oskar Batschmann Giovanni Bellini
Reaktion Books | 2008 | ISBN: 1861893574 | 256 pages | PDF | 23 MB

Hailed as the “savior” of Venetian painting by Jacob Burckhardt and declared by Albrecht Dürer to be the foremost painter of the city, Giovanni Bellini is a pivotal figure in the development of Italian Renaissance art. With Giovanni Bellini, renowned art historian Oskar Bätschmann charts the fraught trajectory of Bellini’s career, highlighting the crucial works that established his far-reaching influence in the Renaissance.
The artist struggled to break out of the long shadow cast by his accomplished father Jacopo and father-in-law Andrea Mantegna, and Bätschmann chronicles Bellini’s development of distinct aesthetic and painting techniques that enabled him to set himself apart. Bellini also insisted on choosing his own subjects and themes, independent of the preferences of his patron Isabella d’Este, and thus set new standards for the role of the artist.
Anchoring the analysis are a wealth of vibrant color reproductions that include such famous works as The Feast of the Gods and Madonna and Child, as well as photographs of Bellini’s lauded altar-pieces at the churches of San Giobbe, Murano, and San Zaccania. Drawing on these masterpieces, Bätschmann argues that Bellini’s artistry and skillful blending of colors created a new aesthetic more akin to music than to previous approaches to painting. And by leading viewers to understand this subtle, refined sensibility, Bellini transformed them into knowledgeable admirers of art.

Art and Illusion by E. H. Gombrich
Phaidon Press | 2000-12-15 | ISBN : 0691070008 | 356 pages | PDF | 35 Mb

Considered a great classic by all who seek for a meeting ground between science and the humanities, Art and Illusion examines the history and psychology of pictorial representation in light of present-day theories of visual perception information and learning. Searching for a rational explanation of the changing styles of art, Gombrich reexamines many ideas on the imitation of nature and the function of tradition. In testing his arguments he ranges over the history of art, noticing particularly the accomplishments of the ancient Greeks, and the visual discoveries of such masters as Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt, as well as the impressionists and the cubists. Gombrich's triumph in Art and Illusion arises from the fact that his main concern is less with the artists than with ourselves, the beholders.

We hear you’ve written some new digital photography titles. What’s the story behind these books?
Wiley Publishing is releasing three new books of mine, Creative Close-Ups: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques , Creative Night: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques , and Creative Composition: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques . My idea with these books was to help people become better photographers by presenting the subject of digital photography in a different way.

What’s different about your approach?
They say that cameras don’t take photos, people do. It’s really true. Someone with a great eye can take masterful photos with an inexpensive camera. Therefore, it is important to know something about photo technique, but the really amazing thing is that we can conceptualize and come up with these bits and bytes that make up a photo—and they can be meaningful to people. I try to help people come up with images that are relevant and meaningful. Cameras and hardware are just tools.

What’s with all the photos in these books?
Well, everyone likes to look at striking images, so one thing my photos do in these books is get people’s attention. However, the photos play another role as well. Each photo in my book is accompanied by the story of how the photo was made and the technical data related to the photo. That way, if you’re not ready to dive into the text itself, you can learn a lot just by browsing the photos.

My feeling is that you truly do learn about photography by looking at photos. It’s much more important to look at images you admire and try and figure out why you like them than it is to read about photography. The photos in these books are baked into the DNA of the teaching strategy. By browsing through the pages, someone can learn a great deal and have an enjoyable visual experience at the same time.

What’s the most important thing that readers can get out of your new books?
I want to inspire readers to be the most creative and best photographers they can be. If you pick up one of my books, I hope you can make use of the technical content and see how the photos relate to some of your own work. The most important thing, however, is to take the ideas in the book, get out there, and do some really peddle-to-the-metal creative photography.

Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan | 2006-05-15 | ISBN: 1403932115 | PDF | 272 pages | 1.13 MB

Transversal Enterprises in the Drama of Shakespeare and his Contemporaries further develops the pioneering critical theory, methodology and aesthetics of "transversal poetics" as it progresses beyond both traditional parameters for analysis of early modern English literature and culture and recent trends in literary, theater, and performance studies to offer new readings of plays by Shakespeare, Peele, Jonson, Marlowe, Middleton, Dekker, Rowley, Webster, and Greene. To elucidate their theoretical and historical claims about hermeneutics, phenomenology, theology, consciousness, subjectivity, social identity, theatre and performance, Reynolds and his collaborators move "investigative-expansively" across a broad range of typically separated fields within and outside of the humanities while giving critical attention to topics that are often marginalized within the fields

Mark T. Conard - The Philosophy of the Coen Brothers

Mark T. Conard - The Philosophy of the Coen Brothers
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky | 2008-12-12 | ISBN: 081312526X | PDF | 304 pages | 1.20 MB

In 2008 No Country for Old Men won the Academy Award for Best Picture, adding to the reputation of filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, who were already known for pushing the boundaries of genre. They had already made films that redefined the gangster movie, the screwball comedy, the fable, and the film noir, among others. No Country is just one of many Coen brothers films to center on the struggles of complex characters to understand themselves and their places in the strange worlds they inhabit. To borrow a phrase from Barton Fink, all Coen films explore “the life of the mind” and show that the human condition can often be simultaneously comic and tragic, profound and absurd.
In The Philosophy of the Coen Brothers, editor Mark T. Conard and other noted scholars explore the challenging moral and philosophical terrain of the Coen repertoire. Several authors connect the Coens’ most widely known plots and characters to the shadowy, violent, and morally ambiguous world of classic film noir and its modern counterpart, neo-noir. As these essays reveal, Coen films often share noir’s essential philosophical assumptions: power corrupts, evil is real, and human control of fate is an illusion. In Fargo, not even Minnesota’s blankets of snow can hide Jerry Lundegaard’s crimes or brighten his long, dark night of the soul.
Coen films that stylistically depart from film noir still bear the influence of the genre’s prevailing philosophical systems. The tale of love, marriage, betrayal, and divorce in Intolerable Cruelty transcends the plight of the characters to illuminate competing theories of justice. Even in lighter fare, such as Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski, the comedy emerges from characters’ journeys to the brink of an amoral abyss. However, the Coens often knowingly and gleefully subvert conventions and occasionally offer symbolic rebirths and other hopeful outcomes. At the end of The Big Lebowski, the Dude abides, his laziness has become a virtue, and the human comedy is perpetuating itself with the promised arrival of a newborn Lebowski.
The Philosophy of the Coen Brothers sheds new light on these cinematic visionaries and their films’ stirring philosophical insights. From Blood Simple to No Country for Old Men, the Coens’ films feature characters who hunger for meaning in shared human experience—they are looking for answers. A select few of their protagonists find affirmation and redemption, but for many others, the quest for answers leads, at best, only to more questions.

Pop-ups are three-dimensional cut-and-folded paper constructions that are widely used for children's books and greeting cards. They have a magical appeal as they mysteriously fold and unfold. Expanding on pop-up material covered in his earlier The Encyclopedia of Origami & Papercraft (LJ 3/1/92), Jackson offers an instructional guide leading the craftsperson through an introductory section of basics to sections covering techniques and original design. The step-by-step projects are exercises in technique only, with complex constructions shown as examples. Like the author's previous books, this one is notable for its clear instructions and bright, colorful illustrations. For users of all ages; highly recommended for public libraries.

Heinrich Zollinger "Color: A Multidisciplinary Approach"
Wiley-VCH | 2000-01-18 | ISBN: 3906390187 | 268 pages | PDF | 3,4 MB

Who is not attracted, fascinated or even amazed by the world of colors? First of all there are the painters of course, but also biologists and mineralogists are interested in colors of the living and the inorganic, 'dead', world. There are neuroscientists, psychologists and ophthalmologists, who study the sensation of color vision and the processing of color stimuli in the eye and the brain. Physicists and chemists investigate color science, i.e. the various causes of color. Interior designers know how the colors of furniture and textiles can influence our condition. In all cultures, colors play a central role due to their symbolic content. All Languages have special terms to describe colors and colorfulness. Visual artists play with colors to reflect the world, perhaps to alienate it, and to give us an idea of their personal point of view. Many other examples of the influence of colors on our daily life, our culture could be found...

The 'exact' science cannot understand color phenomena. This really fascinating book, written in a style that is understandable for an interested layman, deals with all the varied facets of this subject.

The Gallery of Illustration for Shakespeare’s dramatic works

John Boydell The Gallery of Illustration for Shakespeare’s dramatic works
George Barrie, Philadelphia | 1884 | ISBN: N/A | 201 pages | DJVU | 50 MB

A selection of prints from an important series of illustrations of scenes from Shakespeare's plays. They are based on paintings commissioned by John Boydell (1719-1804) from leading British artists for his Shakespeare Gallery, a phenomenally successful project credited with changing the course of English painting by creating a market for historical and literary works. Boydell issued the first set of engravings based on the paintings in 1791, then published a nine-volume folio edition in 1802, and two-volume elephant folios of all the engravings based on the paintings in the gallery in 1803. These prints proved highly influential, "used repeatedly to illustrate the works of Shakespeare, and they appear in all sorts of modified, adapted, and borrowed forms in engravings and drawings that accompany the plays. Producers, directors and critics were all part of that public exposed to the Boydell prints" (Rusche).
