Dorothy G. Singer, Jerome L. Singer - Imagination and Play in the Electronic Age

Television, video games, and computers are easily accessible to twenty-first-century children, but what impact do they have on creativity and imagination? In this book, two wise and long-admired observers of children's make-believe look at the cognitive and moral potential--and concern--created by electronic media.
As Dorothy and Jerome Singer show, violent images in games and TV are as toxic as many observers have feared by stimulating destructive ideas and troubling aggression. But should all electronic media be banned from children's lives? Calmly and authoritatively, the Singers argue that in fact some screen time can enrich children's creativity and play, and can even promote school readiness. With guidance from parents and teachers, empathy, creativity, and imagination can expand and intensify in the electronic age.

Informatics in Control, Automation and Robotics

In this field of research, the term, “machine”, refers not only to computers, but also to diverse control devices in complex dynamic situations, such as industrial processes or transportation networks. Human activities are mainly oriented toward decisionmaking, including monitoring and fault detection, fault anticipation, diagnosis and prognosis, and fault prevention and recovery. The objectives of this decision-making are related to human-machine system performance (production quantity and quality) as well as to overall system safety.

Antennas for Ubiquitous Radio Services in a Wireless Information Society

Wireless applications are now an integral part of everyday life. On the one hand, these applications are being praised for making lives better by facilitating efficient communication and effectively treating disease. On the other hand, they are criticised for invading privacy and representing a potential health hazard. In any case, we are aware of them everywhere in sound, image and data carrying systems, but they are also intrinsic to weather and traffic monitoring systems and in defence and security technology. In recognition of the need for continuous and sustained effort in the field of antenna engineering, the WiSE project (Wide Band Sparse Element Array Antennas) was initiated in 2004 to assemble a catalogue of wide-band radiators and explore the functional possibilities of a shared aperture concept. This book is a collection of papers which offers a retrospective of the WiSE projects main achievements, whilst also assessing their relevance within a wider antenna engineering perspective. There is a constant demand from wireless systems to provide increased performance; higher channel transmission capacity for multimedia and the pattern shaping and beam agility required for high-end radar and space-borne telecommunications. Addressing innovative concepts and state-of-the-art aspects in array antenna design, manufacturing and measurement, this volume provides an overview of the increasingly complex functionalities demanded by evolving radio services.

Analog and Digital Signals and Systems

This book presents a systematic, comprehensive treatment of analog, discrete signal analysis and synthesis and an introduction to analog communication theory. The material is divided into five parts. The first part (Chapters 1-3) is mathematically oriented and deals with continuous-time (analog) signals. The second part (Chapters 4-5) is again mathematically based and deals with Fourier transforms, Hartley transforms, Laplace and Hilbert transforms. The third part (Chapters 6-7) presents basic system analysis, approximations, and analog filter circuits using op-amps. The fourth part (Chapters 8-9) deals with discrete signals, fast algorithms and digital filters. The fifth part deals with an introduction to analog communication systems.

All-Digital Frequency Synthesizer in Deep-Submicron CMOS

A new and innovative paradigm for RF frequency synthesis and wireless transmitter design

Learn the techniques for designing and implementing an all-digital RF frequency synthesizer. In contrast to traditional RF techniques, this innovative book sets forth digitally intensive design techniques that lead the way to the development of low-cost, low-power, and highly integrated circuits for RF functions in deep submicron CMOS processes. Furthermore, the authors demonstrate how the architecture enables readers to integrate an RF front-end with the digital back-end onto a single silicon die using standard ASIC design flow.

Taking a bottom-up approach that progressively builds skills and knowledge, the book begins with an introduction to basic concepts of frequency synthesis and then guides the reader through an all-digital RF frequency synthesizer design:

* Chapter 2 presents a digitally controlled oscillator (DCO), which is the foundation of a novel architecture, and introduces a time-domain model used for analysis and VHDL simulation
* Chapter 3 adds a hierarchical layer of arithmetic abstraction to the DCO that makes it easier to operate algorithmically
* Chapter 4 builds a phase correction mechanism around the DCO such that the system's frequency drift or wander performance matches that of the stable external frequency reference
* Chapter 5 presents an application of the all-digital RF synthesizer
* Chapter 6 describes the behavioral modeling and simulation methodology used in design

The final chapter presents the implementation of a full transmitter and experimental results. The novel ideas presented here have been implemented and proven in two high-volume, commercial single-chip radios developed at Texas Instruments: Bluetooth and GSM.

While the focus of the book is on RF frequency synthesizer design, the techniques can be applied to the design of other digitally assisted analog circuits as well. This book is a must-read for students and engineers who want to learn a new paradigm for RF frequency synthesis and wireless transmitter design using digitally intensive design techniques.

Advances in Machine Learning II {Repost}

This is the second volume of a large two-volume editorial project we wish to dedicate to the memory of the late Professor Ryszard S. Michalski who passed away in 2007. He was one of the fathers of machine learning, an exciting and relevant, both from the practical and theoretical points of view, area in modern computer science and information technology. His research career started in the mid-1960s in Poland, in the Institute of Automation, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland. He left for the USA in 1970, and since then had worked there at various universities, notably, at the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign and finally, until his untimely death, at George Mason University. We, the editors, had been lucky to be able to meet and collaborate with Ryszard for years, indeed some of us knew him when he was still in Poland. After he started working in the USA, he was a frequent visitor to Poland, taking part at many conferences until his death.

PVD for Microelectronics: Sputter Deposition Applied to Semiconductor Manufacturing

Physics of Thin Films is one of the longest running continuing series in thin film science, consisting of 25 volumes since 1963. The series contains quality studies of the properties of various thin films materials and systems.
In order to be able to reflect the development of today's science and to cover all modern aspects of thin films, the series, starting with Volume 20, has moved beyond the basic physics of thin films. It now addresses the most important aspects of both inorganic and organic thin films, in both their theoretical as well as technological aspects. Therefore, in order to reflect the modern technology-oriented problems, the title has been slightly modified from Physics of Thin Films to Thin Films.
