Mike A. Males – Teenage Sex and Pregnancy: Modern Myths, Unsexy Realities

Teenage Sex and Pregnancy: Modern Myths, Unsexy Realities presents a unique view of its subject by analyzing the extensive myths and fears that surround discussion of teenage sex and pregnancy, including their relationship to popular culture, poverty, adult sexual behaviors, and anxieties toward the increasingly public roles of young women.

Award-winning author Mike Males argues that today's discussions rely largely on falsehoods and the suppression of crucial realities. His work details a new view of popular culture as a largely beneficial feature of teens' lives and presents a carefully documented analysis demolishing destructive myths about the "new girl." Debunking popular arguments, he shows that the "teen sex" debate is mired in interest-group talking points that ignore difficult realities to advance politically attuned agendas. It's time, he writes, to modernize the discussion, recognizing that teens act in ways consistent with their interests, with the sexual behaviors of adults, and with the school and job opportunities afforded them.

Jacky Law - Big Pharma: Exposing the Global Healthcare Agenda

Last year the pharmaceutical industry had sales in excess of $300 billion. Clearly one way or another we all pay — whether we buy the drugs directly or through taxation. But is it less clear that we are getting value for money?
In one of the first independent investigations of the modern healthcare system, Jacky Law shows how a small number of corporations have come to dominate the healthcare agenda in Britain and America. She reveals a system in which the relentless pursuit of profit is crowding out the public good. Effective regulators are under intense pressure from corporate lobbies, and companies spend more money on marketing than they spend on research and development. Meanwhile the cost of new drugs rises relentlessly while the number of original new products declines.
All is not well with modern medicine. In what is both a diagnosis and a course of treatment, the author reveals a world where market considerations, not medical need, are determining the research agenda. She points to a future where the public and the medical profession once again have a voice in the kind of healthcare we want — and the healthcare we pay for.

David M. Allen M.D. – How Dysfunctional Families Spur Mental Disorders

Millions of Americans have psychological issues or are affected by those of their family members, ranging from anxiety and bipolar disorder to mood and personality disorders. The growth of Big Pharma, combined with an increasing desire of managed care providers to find simple and "quick fixes," has resulted in an often myopic focus on biological causes of dysfunctional symptoms. There is plenty of evidence to indicate that this propensity to only prescribe pills is often deeply misguided, however.
This book examines the role of dysfunctional family interactions in the genesis and maintenance of certain behavioral problems. The author presents a case for regaining a balance in terms of the biological, psychological, and family-system factors in psychiatric disorders and suggests a way to accomplish this.

A Gentleman of Weight

This is a short mystery novel set in the maelstrom that was Berlin in the 1920′s.
The war to end all wars left no one untouched. Every man who fought the mud and the horror that was trench warfare became a casualty and a stranger to those that knew him before, The peace in Germany was marred with riots, assassinations and civil unrest. Berlin of the 1920′s was not a good time to be a German but it was an interesting time to be a foreign correspondent. The beleaguered Weimar Republic reeled under the constraints of the Treaty of Versailles and old scores were settled.
Herr Ernst Schlage of the Berlin Schutzpolizei is confronted by an apparent suicide of a former German soldier. He thinks it is murder. He is obliged to seek the aid of a British and an American journalist to find the murderer before scandal becomes an embarrassment to the British Home Office and Schlage is ordered to end the investigation.
The story gets into the hands of the British Press and the Home Office is obliged to call in Scotland Yard Special Branch and MI 6 to investigate the rumour. The three men involved in the investigation are summoned to the British Embassy in Berlin where they expect ambassador, Lord D’Abernon, to tell them it is to be closed down before it becomes a political hot potato.

Small Talk

The Pleasure of My Company Low Price

Readers expecting something zany, something crudely humorous from Steve Martin's second novel, The Pleasure of My Company, will discover much greater riches. While the book has a sense of humor, Martin moves everywhere with a gentler, lighter touch in this elegant little fiction that verges on the profound and poetic.

Daniel Pecan Cambridge is the narrator and central consciousness of the novel (actually a novella). Daniel, an ex-Hewlett-Packard communiqué encoder, is a savant whose closely proscribed world is bounded on every side by neuroses and obsessions. He cannot cross the street except at driveways symmetrically opposed to each, and he cannot sleep unless the wattage of the active light bulbs in his apartment sums to 1,125. Daniel's starved social life is punctuated by twice-weekly visits from a young therapist in training, Clarissa; by his prescription pick-ups from a Rite Aid pharmacist, Zandy; and by his "casual" meetings with the bleach-blond real estate agent, Elizabeth, who is struggling to sell apartments across the street. But Daniel's dysfunctional routines are shattered one day when he becomes entangled in the chaos of Clarissa's life as a single mother. Taking care of Clarissa's tiny son, Teddy, Daniel begins to emerge from the safety of logic, magic squares, and obsessive counting.

Martin's craftsmanship is remarkable. The tightly packed novella paints rich portraits with restraint and balance, including nothing extraneous to Daniel's world. The book does not try for pyrotechnics but is contented with a Zen-like simplicity in both prose and plot. Avoiding the crushing bleakness of much contemporary fiction, Martin insists through Daniel--a man haunted by horrors of his own making--that there is possibility for compassion, that broken lives can actually be healed.

Comedy Is Not Pretty

I first listened to this on 8 track when I was a kid and found this a classic rightaway. Martin shows that his witty humor can last into the ages. I highly recomend this to anyone looking for a good laugh. I've gone through some of my old comedy tapes and some were not as funny as I remembered, but Steves comedy is timeless and sophistication of the 90's can't ruin this. a definate must get, humor that doesn't requiring swearing and all the other acts today in order to be funny.

A Wild And Crazy Guy

This is one of the best, no the VERY BEST Steve Martin work from my point of view. I recently gotten ahold of A Wild and Crazy Guy CD and it brought back some very veeeerrrry funny memories from when it first came out in 1978. I was very young and to this day, I still hear King Tut rolling in my head. I can't go anywhere without hearing this on my headset and not laugh myself silly walking down the street to which people may think I'm crazy. This is a good CD to have if you favor people other than Eddie Murphy, George Carlin, or Richard Pryor among others.
